Summery

Trooper is a male sexually mature wild caught orca rescued from the San Juan Island area in early 2012. He was originally named “Kyo” by locals prior to his injury.

Trooper was discovered badly injured after a presumed boat collision in the vicinity of the San Juan Islands. He was collected by rescue teams and was taken to an aquarium in Oregon for evaluation and medical treatment. Three months after being rescued and after receiving daily medical treatment, his dorsal fin  injury was sufficiently healed. However, the injury had resulted in permanent damage to surrounding nerves and muscles, which impaired his ability to swim. He was examined by several veterinarians and experts and was deemed unsuitable for rehabilitation and release.

I can see why his rescuers named him Trooper. He'd have to be one to survive such a painful injury.
